Taste of home

I've been thinking a lot about home lately.   Even though I live 12,966km from home (but who's counting?) I get little tastes of home here and there, sometimes more than others.  I'm definitely tasting it this week.  Cases in point:

1) I wandered on a Payless shoes last week at a mall I've never been to.  It's probably been at least a decade since I've stepped foot into one, and I was thrilled to see the baby shoe section because I had been looking everywhere for some good first-walker (!!) soft-sole-type shoes for Ellis. I found just what I was looking for, on clearance. Ellis is wearing a size three right now.

Baby shoes!

2) It was during the second quarter of the Superbowl that I realized the game was going on.  Reuben and I tuned in on our trusty Ustvnow.com website that lets us stream local U.S. TV.  I'm glad we did, because I was surprisingly thrilled with the game!  Ellis slept through it all, but he wore his Seattle bapron in their honor.

And just as a side note, we were traveling last year on the day of the Superbowl.  The game was between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, and we just happened to be flying from SeaTac to Denver.  We caught the first few minutes of the game on a TV at the airport (I've never seen the bars so crowded!) and the pilot gave us play-by-plays on our flight.  When we were boarding our connecting flight in Denver, the airline employees announced priority boarding to anyone wearing Broncos gear.  Everyone was in good spirits.  :)

3) BBQ.  Some friends of ours here built a smoker in their backyard.  They're from Alabama and they know their barbeque like it's nobody's business.  They sell BBQ once a month (ribs, hot wings, pulled pork, etc).   We enjoyed pulled pork for dinner this weekend, topped off BBQ sauce from TN.  Yum!

4) Homemade mocha frappucino. Have you ever tried making one at home?  I guess this doesn't really count since we do have Starbucks here (in fact, it was the first drive-thru in Penang recently), but why buy when you can make it for almost nothing?

Did I mention on here that we got Ellis's U.S. passport?  He's officially an American now.  We're still waiting for his SSN to arrive, hopefully sooner than later, so we can claim him on our taxes this year!
