The Chinese that settled in Penang in the 1800's lived in settlements built over the water called Jetties.  Each family (clan) had their own little boardwalk community.  Four of them have been preserved in Penang and lucky you, you get to see them in pictures today!   I used to drive past them on my way to work and they were mostly a nuisance and caused traffic jams.  They don't look like much from the street, which is part of the reason I have never visited them before.  One of the jetties unfortunately turned into a tourist trap, but the other three are full of charm and local flair still.

Ellis had a great time chit-chatting with old people and making new friends, as always.
