Light has come

"The people who walk in darkness will see a great light;
those who live in the dark land, the light will shine on them." -Isaiah 9:2

Light is underrated. We live in a time and place where it is easy to come by. We make it with the flip of a switch. Clap on, clap off.  We have no lack of light. We have no chance to miss it.

So when that star leads us to the baby King and he grows up to call himself the Light of the world, I think we miss the point. Light wasn't easy back then. They lived in the dark, both literally and figuratively.  It meant more than I or my brightly-lit world could ever imagine. I see now that I need to understand darkness in order to know this light. He's not just one light among many other lights- He is the light. He has rescued us from darkness!

Hail! the heav'n born Prince of peace!
Hail! the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die:
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"
