Another summer activity: Making mochi. For those of you unfamiliar with this Japanese treasure, it is a sweet dessert made with rice flour on the outside and filled with a variety of delightful things. For those of you who are familiar with mochi, just note that this was a lesson in "it doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it tastes good". It's easy to make in the microwave, and the perfect eat-as-you-go activity for busy hands and inquiring tastebuds. Just be prepared for the sugar rush afterward.
We made two kinds: peanut butter and red bean mochi. The great part is that except for the red bean paste which I bought ready-made here, I had everything I needed in my kitchen already. I used this recipe here (it's a long post but the recipe for the mochi wrappers is numbers 7 and 8 near the bottom), if you're interested in giving it a shot. It's well worth 10 minutes of your time.
